Start the baiting schedule when new damage to fruits is found to exceed 5% of the monthly census of trees.

  1. Place one bait at the base of each tree.
  2. Replace all baits consumed after 7-10 days to coincide with the harvest time in the field. Always place baits after harvest.
  3. 3-4 baiting sessions are usually sufficient to control a normal rat infestation. For severe infestations, more frequent baiting may be necessary.
  4. 2 rounds of baiting per year are recommended.
    Each time cover as large an area as possible to control the number of rats in the field.
A census of damage to new fruits is made once a month before harvest. 10% of samples per area is sufficient.
Cocoa

Start the baiting schedule when the percentage of fruit destroyed by rodent pests exceeds 3-5% of the total fruit picked.

  1. Place one bait at the base of every fifth tree.
  2. Replace all baits consumed every
    7 days.
  3. 3-4 baitings are usually effective for controlling rats.
  4. In cocoa/coconut intercropping areas and where squirrels are abundant, place baits between the branches of cocoa trees.
Fruit damage should be assessed within 10% of the total area.
Paddy

Start the baiting schedule while the weeding work is in progress.

  1. Place one bait every 10 metres along the rice field boundaries. The number of baits required will depend on the length of the boundaries but is usually between 60-100 baits per hectare.
  2. Replace all consumed baits every 7 days.
  3. 4 baitings will provide good control of rats.
For more effective control, each baiting schedule should cover as wide an area as possible.
